The growth, reinforcement and consolidation of the National Scientific and Technological System (STCN) is a priority of the Science and Technology policy, making it more competitive in the national and international context.
In this context, it is particularly important to promote and strengthen the skills of scientific and technological institutions, through the participation of their research teams in scientific research projects and technological development in different scientific fields.

FCT regularly gives researchers the opportunity to submit applications for research projects. This is carried out both in tenders open to all scientific areas of annual periodicity and through tenders aimed at oriented research in certain specific domains or themes, the evaluation being carried out by independent panels, involving national and foreign experts of recognized merit and suitability, constituted for each competition, by scientific area.

Research projects cover all scientific fields, from life and health sciences to social and human sciences, including engineering, exact sciences, natural and environmental sciences. The modalities of the research projects to be supported are specified in the Opening Notices of each of the tenders.
